August is Anti-Vaccine Education Month!

"It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness"- Carl Sagan

My recent offer to drink Jock Doubleday's vaccine cocktail spurred some dialog on the subject of vaccines. The discussions have been reasonable interactions with well-intentioned people that have family histories of physical maladies temporally correlating with vaccination. This, plus the copious bad science on the internet, has provided a foundation for the propagation of bad science, scare tactics, and non-scientific interpretations of the scholarly literature. Most completely ignore the scholarly literature because it does not support their claims.

My goal is to take a thoughtful and comprehensive anti-vaccine website, www.vaccinetruth.org, and reveal how facts can be distorted, how scientific information is miscommunicated, and how heavy risk is implied where little exists.

This is not an attack or debate. It is a lesson on how a scientist approaches a scientific or medical topic. With the illumination of science's candle, maybe we can together understand how to make better decisions about information, and divert our attention to the actual causes of childhood disorders.

Then let’s not divert our attention from vaccines until we find out for sure they are not the cause of the illnesses. More studies need to be done and not by the manufacturers of the vaccines so we can find out for sure vaccines are innocent.
